Next in our Employee Spotlight series, we are proud to feature Leanna Bailey, Director of Legal. Leanna has been with MZ for just over four years. She was promoted to Director of Legal in February 2022 and recently joined our Senior Leadership Team.

Leanna manages the legal aspects of our complex capital transactions, oversees legal administration, and ensures the smooth and efficient closure of financings.

How long have you been working at MarshallZehr?

I’ve been with MZ for over four years; joining in October 2019, just 5 months before the pandemic hit.

Can you briefly describe your career progression at MarshallZehr?

I started in an analyst position in the Legal department, absorbing as much as I could about the role and the company. Within a year and a half, I was promoted to a Manager position, influencing departmental policy, and gaining exposure to the regulatory compliance side of the business.

Now, as the Director of Legal, I’ve recently joined the Senior Leadership Team, where I utilize the knowledge and skills I’ve developed to enhance our legal operations, while growing within Canada’s dynamic real estate industry.

I’ve had the opportunity to dive into a space I feel passionate about while driving our company goals forward.

What does your day look like in your current role?

My day revolves around ensuring transactional activities are progressing, especially in complex capital structuring opportunities. I enjoy bringing cross-functional team members together for deal closings and often review legal agreements, address nuanced requests from lenders, and help others overcome obstacles in workflows while overseeing legal administration across our portfolio.

What is your favorite part about working at MarshallZehr?

It’s challenging to pick just one thing! I adore my colleagues and feel blessed to learn from them daily. Working on complex financing structures in the mortgage industry is intensely satisfying. It provides a sense of pride when our team successfully navigates transactions, helping to provide relief in the ongoing housing crisis.

What advice would you give to someone interested in joining the MarshallZehr team?

Success at MarshallZehr hinges on three key attributes: immense pride in one’s work, willingness for constant learning and professional growth, and strong adaptability.
